Student & Faculty Choreography Premieres at the LSU Dance Concert
April 12, 2004
Baton Rouge, LA - The LSU Dance Concert, directed by Molly Buchmann,
will showcase the wide range of talent in LSU Theatre's dance minor
as student choreographers and performers present new works created
specifically for this annual event.
Following on the heels of World Dance Day (April 29), the LSU Dance
Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 30, and at 2:00
p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on May 1, in the Claude L. Shaver Theatre in
the Music and Dramatic Arts Building at LSU. Tickets are $6 for
students and $8 for adults.
This year's concert features new works by six student choreographers:
Tana Baldwin, Alicia Corbett, Jessica Collins, Jessica Decorte,
Melissa Eccles, and Rhonda Guthrie.
"The student choreographers this year have a much wider range
of experience because they are now in their second and third years.
They're also benefiting from the wide range of talent among our
faculty," said Buchmann. "Our teachers are such specialists
within their fields, and the students are bringing all of this to
their choreography and performances."
The choreographers lead a large group of talented dancers known
as the LSU Dance Ensemble. Together, they spend a full semester
creating a variety of new dance pieces to be performed in the concert.
Every year the concert features new elements and performers.
"This year we have a new improv class," said Buchmann,
who directs LSU's Dance program. "In addition to modern dance,
jazz, ballet, and improv, we also have special performances from
our faculty and guest performers."
Faculty members Susan Perlis, Keri Bourg, Lucretia Hydell, and
Kathleen Spinnazola, have choreographed pieces for their more advanced
technique classes. Additionally, Hydell and Spinnazola will perform
solo pieces of their own. There will also be guest appearances from
the LSU Golden Girls, the LSU Tiger Girls, and the LSU Hip Hop Coalition.
