DEPARTMENT: The Department of Theatre
has a full-time faculty staff of 25 with 170 majors, approximately
35 graduate students and offers the B.A. (performance, design/technology,
theatre studies, literature, theory, history and arts administration),
M.F.A. (acting and costume design/technology), and Ph.D. (theatre
history, dramatic literature, criticism, and theory). LSU Theatre
supports Swine Palace Productions, our professional, year-round
Equity company.
COLLEGE: The LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts is
one of the nation's most comprehensive centers for the training
of professionals in music and theatre. The College, comprising the
LSU School of Music and the LSU Department of Theatre, includes
almost 100 faculty and staff, more than 600 majors, and offers a
wide array of degrees and curricular concentrations from the baccalaureate
through the doctorate. Already a national leader in several areas,
the College aspires "to achieve and sustain the highest standards
of performance, creativity, pedagogy, research and scholarship in
music and theatre.
THEATRE FACILITIES: In 2003, the Music and Dramatic Arts
Building, home of the Department since its founding, is scheduled
to undergo a $23 million renovation, creating 3,000 square feet
of scene shop support areas with windows. This project will also
include state-of-the-art classrooms, production facilities, studios,
rehearsal spaces, and a new studio theatre. The Claude L. Shaver
Theatre, a 475-seat proscenium style theatre built in 1932, is one
of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the South. This
space will be restored to its original brilliance as part of this
project.
The Reilly Theatre, home of Swine Palace Productions is a 488-seat
performance facility. A former livestock judging pavilion, it was
one of the original 21 buildings that made up the campus in 1926.
Theatre 150, located in the Music and Dramatic Arts Building Building,
is a modified proscenium style 85-seat workshop space.
