James L. Murphy
Production Manager, Technical Director and Assistant Professor of Theatre Technology
Murphy serves as Production Manager and Technical Director for Swine Palace and LSU Theatre. The undergraduate coursework he teaches includes stagecraft, scenic construction and technical design. He is currently developing the curriculum for the new MFA specialization in Scenic Design and Technology. Mr. Murphy was the Lighting Designer for Swine Palace’s international production of The Heidi Chronicles, which toured to Shanghai and Beijing, China in the summer of 2007. He has also designed lights for Swine Palace’s summer productions of Always…Patsy Cline (2004, 2006) and Pump Boys and Dinettes (2005). He was the Set Designer for Swine Palace’s world premiere of Ping Chong’s Cocktail (spring 2007) and LSU Theatre’s productions of Lorca in a Green Dress (fall 2006) and The Illusion (fall 2004). Mr. Murphy completed training at the ATHE Leadership Institute. He has presented on a variety of panels at conferences of the Association for theatre in Higher Education, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and the Southeastern Theatre Conference. He received his M.F.A. in Technical Design and Production from the Yale School of Drama in 1997. Mr. Murphy previously worked as an Assistant Professor/ Production Manager for the Theatre Arts Department of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Murphy has also worked with The People’s Light and Theatre Company, Swarthmore College, The Brandywine Ballet, QVC and six seasons at the Pennsylvania Stage Company, a LORT theatre formerly in Allentown, PA.
